LIGHT 23: Collapse

Image
LIGHT 23: Collapse Even after Lumira lost consciousness, the expanded stable zone held for a while. A faint white light remained around the sealed collapse zone like a thin veil. White particles scattered across the stone floor drifted slowly, and the sound of collapse had withdrawn into the distance. The evacuated residents moved toward the outer passage under the guidance of the guardians. At the center of it all, Lumira lay motionless on the stone floor. Elia knelt beside her and checked her breathing with a weakly trembling white glow. She had not vanished. But she had not returned, either. The light remaining around Lumira weakened as time passed. The protective range that had spread outward began shrinking inward little by little, and the white radiance covering the floor faded. The stable zone that had supported the space only moments before was quietly losing strength. It won’t hold. Elia’s gaze fell to Lumira’s arm. Even so, one single lumin...

LIGHT 22: The Cost

LIGHT 22: The Cost The resonance that had shaken the entire collapse space was suddenly severed. The moment Lumira made her choice, the light spreading across her arm pulsed hard. A white radiance ran from her arm through her entire body, crossed the stone floor beneath her feet, and surged all at once toward the depths of the collapse zone. The distortion filling the passage trembled. The cracks across the ceiling stopped, and the sinking floor that had been rolling like waves slowly began to settle. The collapse reaction, which had reached the brink of rupture, weakened as if being pushed back, and the low groan that had covered the entire space gradually receded. White particles drifted through the air. The light of the crumbling sealing array recovered its outline, and the lines that had been breaking in intervals began to connect faintly again. The collapse has stopped. Not completely. Even so, the space had been pulled back from rupture. ...

LIGHT 21: Choice

LIGHT 21: Choice Lumira’s shadow, having reached the center of the collapse zone, stood still within the black current. The passage was no longer being held as a single place. The distortion that had been trembling deep inside the walls had spread to the floor, passed from the floor to the ceiling, and sent the same tremor as far as the distant galleries. Multiple corridors overlapped. The shadow of a crumbling pillar stretched onto a wall in another place, and only the white particles drifted behind, delayed. At the center of it, the luminous markings floating across Lumira’s shadow connected their final line. The thin, divided white lines assembled into one shape, spreading from the shadow’s arm to its shoulder, then from its shoulder to its chest. The light that appeared over the black outline was neither Lumira’s own nor a guardian’s. It is complete. Lumira stared at the shadow far away. It should have been too distant for her to see, yet that change...

LIGHT 20: The Night Before the Breach

LIGHT 20: The Night Before the Breach Even after the boundary light vanished, only the luminous markings spreading across Lumira’s arm continued to glow in the darkness. The entire passage had lost its light, leaving the outlines of the walls and floor blurred. The lines that had marked the boundary moments earlier were gone, and the management displays remained silent. Only the white light leaking from Lumira’s arm barely illuminated the stone floor and the feet of the residents standing there. They can see it. They can see it now. The residents began gathering toward that light little by little. No one had told them to. In the darkness, it was the only thing they could see. Low footsteps overlapped, and people holding their breath moved closer around Lumira. I have to make them move away. But where? Among them, Elia’s white light, which should have disappeared, began flickering back on in broken intervals. A pale glow rose in the depths of he...
